Oakes is part of the Nyoda Girl Scout Council which provides Girl Scout opportunities im eastern South Dakota and parts of North Dakota.
With the motto, "Where Girls Grow Strong," Girls Scouts offer challenging and educational activities for girls from kindergarten through high school and beyond. A member starts as a Daisy in kindergarten or first grade, then progresses to Brownie where she explores her world a little more, going on overnight camping trips or planting flowers for a community project within her troop.
The next level is Junior (third to sixth grade) where they participae in GirlSports activities, lead a bike safety workshop in their community, or investigate local history and learn abou the women and men who helped share their hometown.
For girls in sixth grad and above, Girl Scouting for Cadettes and Seniors takes on a whole new dimension as they develop their leadership and decision-making skills. At this level,. they explore their interests in future careers, participate in Wider Opportunities trips such as traveling to New York in 2005 with other NYODA girls and adult volunteers.
Throughout their Girl Scout years, recognition is given to those who demonstrate excellence through community service or individual performance. For ages 18 and older, scouting offers adult volunteers a chance to share their insight and sense of adventure with girls in their community.
