Oakes is the commercial hub of southeastern North Dakota with a diverse business climate in an ever changing economy.
Oakes Enhancement, Inc. (OEI) is the local economic organization for the area. In 1989 the organization was formed to serve as a development group for Oakes with over 400 members joining the organization. In addition to assisting business development, the organization developed an industrial park infrastructure.
The Oakes Enhancement, Inc. (OEI) shall create an environment that stimulates commercial, industrial and residential growth and development while enhancing the quality of life in the greater Oakes, North Dakota trade area.
The Industrial Park development included obtaining both federal and regional grants and loans to complete the water, sewer, curb and gutter fire protection and storm sewer project for the park. The group obtained grants from the Economic Development Administration federal program, the South Central Dakota Regional Council and the North Dakota Department of Transportation to assist in the development of the infrastructure.
Land is still available for development in the Industrial Park.
Oakes has been designated a USDA Rural Development "Certified Champion Community" as part of the Dakota State Line Regional Alliance. This designation was garnered after submitting the strategic plan and participating in the Benchmark Management System. The designation increases availability of USDA rural development fund opportunities through preference points in applications for Rural Development funding.
Catch the wave of community pride! It is evident in the vast number of volunteer organizations, local events and economic activity found in the community! It is also visible from the clean city streets to the manicured summer gardens to the constant renovation efforts of local retailers, residents and commerce leaders working together to maintain a sense of community pride!
