Regular garbage pickup is Monday if you live South of Main Avenue and Wednesday if you live North of Main Avenue (in city limits) and Rural Residents living East & North of town. Please see the city forms page for more information on holiday pickups, rates, and acceptable items.

Recycling

Recycling is provided by City of Oakes and is collected every third Tuesday of the month. The service and Blue Single Sort Recycling Cart are provided as a courtesy to you from the City. A detailed list of items permitted in the container and calendar is available below or on the city forms page. 

Cardboard can be disposed of at multiple locations in town. Any metal dumpster can be utilized. Please remove packaging material and break down boxes. Household garbage is not allowed in these metal dumpsters. Cardboard only!

Waste Disposal

The Landfill is located 2 miles West and 3 ⁄ 4 mile south of Oakes. No household garbage accepted. Apliances with Freon must be certified and tagged that the Freon has been removed. Computers and televisions are not accepted.

Landfill Hours: 1st Saturday of each month, 8am-12pm

The Compost Pile is open daily during daylight hours. Only grass clippings, leaves and garden waste are allowed at this site. Tree branches, twigs, and wood need to be placed in the burn pile inside the gate.

All loads must be separated before entering the site to avoid possible turning away of your load.

Snow Removal

In order to have snow removal completed in a timely and efficient matter, all vehicles must be removed from the streets and alleys after an accumulation of one inch or more of snowfall. Those vehicles not moved are subject to citation.


Streets and Lights

Street repairs and maintenance are conducted by the City Street Department. This includes patching, graveling and blading areas in town. Street signs and stop lights are also maintained by the City and are reviewed and ⁄ or serviced annually. During the "non-snow" season, street sweeping is completed as follows: Streets-every other Monday, Avenues-every other Wednesday, Downtown-every Friday.

The street lights are maintained by Otter Tail Power Company. Otter Tail should be contacted for any concerns regarding replacement or repairs.  701.252.0540


Animal & Vector Control

Domesticated Animals:
Cats and dogs are not allowed to run loose off property unless under the care and control of their owners. Pets must be on a leash or confined in the owner's premises. Please contact the Police Department 701.742.2172, to report.

It shall also be unlawful to keep or harbor any dog or cat that disturbs the peace by habitually howling, barking, whining, meowing or making other disagreeable noise. Anyone wishing to file a complaint must sign a written statement to be submitted to the City Attorney for review.

Licenses:
Within city limits, all dogs and cats over 1 month of age must be licensed. Licenses are available for purchase (along with proof of Rabies Vaccination) at City Hall. Pet licenses do not expire and cost a lifetime fee of $15.00.

Animal Traps:
Animal Traps are available for rent free of charge at City Hall. A $30.00 security deposit and a release form are required at time of rental. It will be the responsibility of the individual, using the Animal Trap, to release or destroy and dispose of any non-domesticated animals. The City of Oakes will not be responsible for removal or disposal of any non-domesticated animals.

Mosquito Control:
The city provides mosquito control through ground and aerial spraying each year. Ground spraying is usually conducted late at night. Larvicide briquettes are also placed in areas with standing water and areas that could potentially have standing water.
