Community Connection for March 30, 2023

Things to celebrate…

OK, we might be getting a bit ahead of ourselves with this one, but let’s celebrate that technically—as in, the calendar says so—it’s spring! And springtime in Oakes means it’s time to start talking community beautification again! On April 12th at 7 pm at Growing Small Towns, anyone who is interested in the topic of making Oakes a more beautiful place to live is welcome to join us for a chat! Don’t worry…your presence at this meeting won’t commit you to anything long-term, but Oakes is only as beautiful as we make it and we’d love to hear your ideas and dreams!

News to know…

If you’re feeling a bit lazier and your "get-after-it" feels absent, you’re not alone. Statistically, March is the most unproductive month of the year in the United States. They've tied this back to March Madness. Some companies lose up to $1.9 billion in wages paid to workers who were not productive and instead spent company time betting on the NCAA tournament. No judgment here…just a fascinating little tidbit!

Ideas to spread…

There is a big difference between being dumb and being a beginner. When we’re starting something new, there is no reason for us to have any expectation that we’ll be good at it, despite all the work we've done to prepare. You can read all the books, watch all the tutorials, and take all the courses; when you're new at something, chances are, you won't be great at it. That doesn’t make you “not smart”, it just makes you a beginner. When we move through the world feeling like everyone will judge us if we don’t get things right, or that we’ll look weak if we have to ask for help, remembering this key point can help. Can you imagine if we treated babies who are just learning to walk with the same impatience and criticism we show ourselves as adults trying to do something new? So, the next time you’re feeling dumb because you just can’t figure something out, remember that as a beginner, you’re not supposed to be good. And you’ll never be “dumber” about the thing than you are right now. If it’s a skill you have to learn, keep taking one tiny step at a time. You’ll get better as you practice. And? What if the thing you’re beating yourself up over could simply be done by someone else? Delegate. Outsource. You don’t have to do it all. It’s why we’re uniquely made with our own brand of skills and talents. Finally? Don’t let the fear of looking stupid hold you back from trying new things. Even the best in the world were once beginners.
