Community Connection for April 28, 2022

Stuff to do…

The Oakes Parent Teacher Organization is hosting a Spring Fling for students in grades 7-12 tomorrow night from 7 - 11 pm at the Oakes Community Center. It’s awesome to have safe, fun things for our kids to do so encourage your kids to get a little spiffed up and cut a rug with their fellow students!

Things to celebrate…

There have been several successful business transitions in Oakes lately and it’s always something to cheer about! When a business owner is able to find a successor, everyone wins! If you’re a business owner and you don’t have a succession plan but want to talk about it, reach out to Rebecca at OEI and she’ll connect you with the resources to create a plan. Successful business transitions help us develop new local leadership and good planning can alleviate the stress of not being able to get out of the business you spent your life building.

News to know…

The Workforce Development Council of ND recently announced a Regional Workforce Impact Program, offering $15 million in grants throughout the state. Region 6, which is the region Oakes is in, will be appropriated just over $1 million and we are working with the South Central Dakota Regional Council in Jamestown to discuss potential programs to spend the money wisely across the region. With 9 counties in the region, the money won’t go far, but we’re hoping to see some great ideas that will benefit our employers in Oakes.

Ideas to spread…

Mike Rowe from TV’s “Dirty Jobs” was in Fargo last week for the Voices of Vision conference hosted by the FMWF Chamber of Commerce. He shared a lot about the importance of not labeling things: he encouraged the audience to quit saying “white-collar” and “blue-collar” when referring to jobs or “higher” versus “alternative“ when talking about education. He wants to remind people, especially students, that the path to success is often crooked and to be determined only by trying new things and searching for your own “toolbox”.
