Stuff to do…

As a fundraiser for our parks and green spaces in Oakes, we’ve teamed up with the Oakes Active Arts Club! We encourage businesses or individuals to purchase one (or several!) steel cutout oak leaves for just $10 and work with an artist to design them into unique one-of-a-kind pieces of art! The finished art pieces will be on display in your business starting June 9 and we’ll auction them off June 9 - 23. Contact Kausha at the Chamber at director@oakeschamber.com to get registered!

Things to celebrate…

Speaking of Kausha Magill, this week, we want to celebrate her and all the people we lovingly refer to as transplants to Oakes! It’s not uncommon to believe that when people aren’t “from here” we can’t expect them to contribute or love our place like we do. Kausha is proof positive that not only can transplants develop the same love and pride as original residents, they can and usually do make our communities better. Hug your favorite transplant today! We wouldn't be who we are without them!

News to know…

We have loved the feedback we’ve received about the updated website and our traffic is really picking up! But, like with all new things, we continue to find mistakes or edits that need to be made. Please help us make these changes! If you have information on the site, please check it out and if you see something that’s incorrect, let us know and we’ll get it updated! It’s been so much fun to get feedback from people in and from outside the community. Oakes is getting noticed and we’re pumped about it!

Ideas to spread…

Recently, we heard the idea of referring to our collective community pride as “civic self-esteem”. We love this reframe because it makes this challenge of a collective issue more personal and individualized. If you want to improve your own self-esteem, you’d consider things such as using positive affirmations, figuring out what you’re good at and cultivating those things, and finally, stopping with the negative self-talk that holds you back. Take each suggestion and consider what that would look if we adopted those practices in Oakes? How would we benefit if we thought about our pride as self-esteem? How others treat us is often a reflection of how we feel about ourselves.
