Community Connection for May 25, 2023

Things to celebrate…

We’ve had so many visitors stop in at Growing Small Towns to check out the community puzzle! It’s been so fun to hear people ask questions and share their enthusiasm for this amazing community project. So far, we’ve had people from Florida, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Minnesota, and even an international visitor from Canada! The puzzle is certainly incredible; it speaks to the power of people coming together and what can be done when we collectively pool our talents. It’s a beautiful symbol of what makes Oakes such a great place to be!

News to know…

Through North Dakota Council on the Arts, Oakes is involved with a program funded through a grant called Arts Across the Prairie.  Region 6— the nine counties of Logan, McIntosh, Stutsman, Barnes, Dickey, Lamoure, Wells, Foster, And Griggs—is beginning the process of eventually creating a cultural art installation that represents who we are as a region. The group of volunteer stakeholders are just starting to meet, but are actively engaged in a discussion about what makes our area special along with brainstorming potential locations for the installation. The only requirement is that the artwork has to be featured in a place away from both buildings and people. This is likely to be over a multi-year process, but once completed, every region’s installation (there are 8 in total) will be featured on a specific tour. Check out all the amazing programs available through ND Council on the Arts. It’s so awesome to celebrate art and culture in North Dakota!

Ideas to spread…

Knowledge isn’t power until it’s applied. You can read all the books, take all the courses, and learn all the things; until you try to apply that knowledge, it’s not true learning. This is a difficult thing to grasp when we’re conditioned to believe that perfect planning yields perfect results; this couldn’t be further from the truth. There is no such thing as perfect planning OR execution and we’d all benefit greatly from embracing the messy uncertainty of practicing. Knowledge can’t become skills without a lot of trial and error—if you’re practicing perfectly, you’re not really practicing at all. Get started. Learn as you go. And soon enough? You’ll have the full power of that learning in your back pocket.
