Community Connection for June 1, 2023

Things to celebrate…

Irrigation Days is just around the corner and it’s always a great time to praise the fact that our community has come together every year (except for 2020) for over five decades to celebrate Oakes and the great people that make it what it is! This year’s theme is “Around the World” which was inspired by the Community Puzzle. We invite you to get involved, invite your family and friends to come for the weekend, and really celebrate this fine community we call home!

News to know…

On June 15 and 16, CHI is hosting a live-streamed Domestic Abuse Summit at Growing Small Towns. This summit is geared toward healthcare professionals, law enforcement and first responders, prosecutors, judges, social service providers, social workers, teachers, victim advocates, and other helping professionals and you’ll learn interventions and pieces of training to help stop family and sexual violence. Light snacks and lunch will be provided both days. There is no cost to attend but pre-registration is required. Google 2023 Domestic Abuse Summit CHI to find the information necessary to register.

Ideas to spread…

If you haven’t heard the value of the word “yet”, let’s explore that a bit more! The word “yet” used in this context “I’m really not any good at math…yet!” suggests that you know your current state of ability or aptitude is flexible. If you want to get better, with the right attitude towards learning, you will. This concept is foundational to demonstrating a growth mindset, which we’re fortunate to have as one of our key learning commitments at Oakes Public School. The opposite of a growth mindset is a fixed mindset; this suggests that our current levels of performance are just that: fixed. It’s clear to see how embracing the word “yet” signifies not only to ourselves but to everyone around us, that we know the power of believing we can improve. We won’t all be good at everything, but how we frame our potential is the key to having a growth mindset.
