Community Connection for June 9, 2022

Stuff to do…

More like, what is there NOT to do!? We highly recommend that you get your hands on one of the large full Irrigation Days posters to make sure you’re not missing out on any of the amazing opportunities for fun and entertainment this weekend! Let’s welcome the heck out of those visitors and remember, some of them might love the opportunity to come back, so let’s find out how to help them do it!

Things to celebrate…

Our very own B & B Gardens was recently named one of North Dakota’s Best Garden Centers on the bestthingsnd.com site! It’s always so cool when our local favorites get statewide recognition! Thank you for offering such a wide variety of beautiful things to help make our community bright and cheery, not to mention, the proven fact that flowers and gardening is great for our mental health! Congratulations to Angie and her team!

News to know…

Mark your calendar for June 14. That’s the day of the primary election in North Dakota and locally, we’ll be voting for our elected officials, including the mayor, city council, county commissioners, and school board members. These positions are not glamorous; the candidates running are stepping up to serve. We don’t all need to fully engage in politics, but we do all need to pay attention to these races and show our involvement by exercising our right to vote.

Ideas to spread…

If you haven’t met any of the individuals running for our elected positions, give them a call and invite them to lunch or coffee. Cultivating real relationships is the key to overcoming differences of opinion and truly working together. In a small town like Oakes, we often make the mistake of thinking we already know everyone and we let poor delivery of an idea get in the way of listening to it. Let’s use the intimacy of this town to our benefit instead; we can get things done faster when we work together. The first step to working together is to really get to know each other.
