Community Connection for July 21, 2022

Stuff to do…

If you haven’t been to the Oakes Golf Course lately, you should stop in and check out the fun and interesting things Rachel and the crew have been offering this summer! We have a beautiful little course and with great team members in place, it can really be a fun place to take visitors or just enjoy a little sun and fun with your local friends!

Things to celebrate…

Our source of inspiration today is none other than Mr. Rogers. He has been famously quoted as saying, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” Let’s take a minute today to celebrate the helpers in our community. Our medical providers including a whole slate of holistic practitioners in addition to traditional medicine, our emergency services, fire district, and police department are all people we are so fortunate to have in Oakes. We all can be helpers, too! Take a look around, see who might need support or assistance, and find ways to get them to the right people. Let’s do our best to continue to be “people who are helping”.

News to know…

North Dakota was recently ranked in CNBC’s list of America’s Top States for Business. Our overall rank was 13 but we specifically earned the #1 spot for Business Friendliness. “Companies follow the path of least resistance. That includes a legal and regulatory framework that does not overburden businesses. We measure each state’s lawsuit and liability climates, regulatory regimes covering areas such as trade and labor, as well as overall bureaucracy,” the article stated as it relates to this specific category ranking. What an incredible opportunity to leverage the desire for businesses to start with fewer headaches!

Ideas to spread…

“My ego is not my amigo” is a phrase that we heard recently and we encourage everyone to consider this. There are several ways to define ego, but psychologist Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman puts it well when he says ego is “that aspect of the self that has the incessant need to see itself in a positive light.”

Ego is the thing that makes you think you are you, separate from other things. It is inherently self-focused. Separating your ego from your intellect is about not making ideas about you. It’s about not feeling threatened by disagreements, dissonance, or ambiguity. It means not making ideas personal. When we can pay attention to what’s triggering our egos, we can figure out how to stop standing in our own way and have a much stronger chance to usher forward new ideas.
