Things to celebrate…

It’s been so much fun to watch the progress happening at The Grand Theater! We can’t wait to see the changes they’re making! On August 12, they are hosting a fundraising event to help pay for the new roof, which is just one of the many expensive aspects of the renovation project. The event will be on Main Street right in front of the theater and everyone is encouraged to come out and support it! They’ll have bouncy houses, food, and so much more to enjoy! Let’s celebrate with the new owners!

News to know…

In national (and state!) news, Governor Burgum has officially qualified for the first GOP primary debate on August 23 in Milwaukee—the largest city in the key battleground state of Wisconsin. Governor Burgum has poured millions of his own personal wealth into his campaign in media and advertising, but likely hundreds of thousands more went to an unexpected tactic: he promised those who gave even a single $1 to his campaign a $20 gift card in return, all to help him meet a requirement set up by the Republican National Committee that candidates have 40,000 unique donors, with 200 in 20 different states or territories. It will be interesting to watch him on a national platform against better-known candidates.

Ideas to spread…

What does it mean to be welcoming? How do you know if you are, personally? How does a community know if it is? When it comes to attracting talent to a community, one of the things to think about is how to be more open, inviting, and inclusive. Being the opposite of this immediately shrinks the available options in an already-tight labor market. This could mean a number of things, but we’d encourage everyone to think about what it might mean to be a bit more open and inviting here in Oakes. Rather than thinking of people who are different from us, racially, culturally, socially, or otherwise, as “outliers” or “different”, what if we simply got to know them? Asking questions, looking for common ground, and seeking first to understand are solid principles for all personal interactions; let’s do our best to be a place where all people can feel welcome here, even if they’re not originally from here. The future growth of our community likely depends on it.
