Stuff to do…

If you haven’t been out to the golf course on Tuesday nights for trivia yet, you still have a few opportunities as the summer begins to wind down! Trivia starts at 7:30 pm and you can enjoy destroying your friends at a clearly “non-competitive” game while snacking on pizza and beer specials!

Things to celebrate…

We don’t often think of it, but one of the things we can be grateful for here in Oakes is our distance from bigger communities. Yes, sometimes, it might be nice to zip to Fargo a bit quicker than our distance allows, but the fact that we’re at least an hour from a bigger community helps us be a self-sufficient town in ways that “bedroom” communities can't always be. There are a lot of unique and niche businesses that do and could thrive in Oakes since it’s an economic hub for the region. Sometimes, we have to change the way we think about challenges; they can be benefits with the right spin!

News to know…

The world is full of stressors and one of the ways we can all better handle stress, regardless of its origin, is by focusing on our breathing. Clearly, we’re all breathing all the time, but when was the last time you actually thought about your breath while doing it? A few things happen when you do: 1. Your breath is more full of oxygen 2. Your heartbeat slows 3. Your blood pressure stabilizes. All three result in an overall calming effect. And the best part? It’s totally free! Plus, it’s like a muscle, in that, the more you breathe deeply, the more your brain and body will recall the feeling, helping you to deal with stress more effectively in the future. So, the next time you’re overwhelmed, just take a beat. Take as many slow breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth as you can. Sometimes, it really is the little things!

Ideas to spread…

We can love something and still want to make it better. Whether it’s a relationship, a home, or even our fair community of Oakes, just because we want to improve it doesn’t mean we don’t genuinely love it. Love is a choice and while our love shouldn't be conditional, it’s still healthy to want more for the things and people we love.
