Community Connections for September 14, 2023

Things to celebrate…

It’s officially fall and this time of year is a favorite for many! Besides the pumpkin spice flavored and scented everything, the eventually crunchy leaves, and general sweatshirt weather, we also get to celebrate that autumn means the Wine Walk! Next Saturday, September 23, from 2 to 7 pm, the Oakes Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 2nd Annual Wine Walk. This is a not-to-be-missed event with 11 different stops (think unique finds and amazing deals, friends!) which means 22 different wines to try AND amazing food to boot! Tickets are $37/person and on sale now; go to the Chamber’s Facebook page, click on Events, and click Find Tickets, or stop by the Chamber office during their regular business hours of Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 am to 5 pm and Thursdays from 9 am to 1 pm. Enjoy the beautiful and short-lived fall!

News to know…

Next week is Homecoming at Oakes Public School! This year, we are celebrating 100 years of education in Oakes and we encourage you to check out the school’s Facebook page for all the activities, including coronation and Susan German’s induction into the Hall of Fame on Monday night. There will also be multiple opportunities throughout the week to learn more about the school’s engagement with ICS, a consulting company, and the results of their facilities assessment. Our school is an anchor in our community; we’d love to see more people get involved and get engaged. Go Tornadoes!

Ideas to spread…

Last week at our BIO Girls session, we discussed what kindness really looks like in real life. We always encourage people to “be kind” but what does that really mean when we’re just going about our normal daily activities? Here are 3 simple things the girls came up with and it’s such a good list, we thought we’d share it here, too! The first is simply to smile more. A smile is one of the easiest ways to disarm others, plus? It’s free and you always have it with you. There really aren’t any excuses for not flashing more smiles! Then, we talked about doing simple, easy things like holding open doors for others and paying more attention to how others are doing around us. If we see someone struggling to carry things, we can step in and offer help. Finally, the girls talked about the importance of using manners. We don’t always equate the use of our “Ps and Qs” to kindness, but truly, a recommitment to saying these pleasantries can really help us connect with others in brief interactions. The BIO Girls mantra for this lesson was “Kindness is Contagious” so let’s spread it around!
